HISTORY
The High Street Road Animal Hospital began life as a retirement clinic for Dr William Chamberlain who had recently moved to Melbourne from Tasmania. He bought the house that stood on the 527 site and proceeded to build a small clinic in the backyard, next to the existing garage. The year was 1960. With time, Dr Chamberlain fully retired and Dr Shane Moore purchased the clinic in 1980 and owned the clinic for 9 years before choosing to lease it for 3 years and then sell it to Dr Richard Benton in March 1989.
During the lease period and for the first two years after purchasing the practice, Dr Benton lived in the house at 527 and continued to work out of the very small clinic in the backyard! Clients would come down the driveway, ring the door buzzer and enter the tiny waiting room to be greeted by the single nurse on duty. The rest of the clinic was comprised of a small consultation room, which also doubled as a surgery room, and a small kennel room. Needless to say it would not be long before Dr Benton needed more room!!
By April 1995 it was time to expand the clinic! The clinic was moved into the house and the old clinic was knocked down to create the car park. By chance, the house next door came up for sale and Dr Benton was able to move in next door. The house was pretty basic but Dr Benton had long term plans for it so there was no need to renovate!
Once the clinic was moved into the more visible, renovated house, there was a period of dramatic growth for the practice. It wasn’t long before this building was also bursting at the seams! After only three years, it was time to expand again.
At this time, Dr Rachel Dalsanto, who had worked as an associate with Dr Benton for two and a half years, purchased a partnership in the business. Together they set about planning the new hospital building.
Soon after, in 1999, Dr Benton’s House next door was demolished to make way for the new extension which spans both blocks.
The Hospital is proud to offer a very high standard of care and professionalism to its clients and their pets and currently has three full time veterinarians working in it.
